ACT ONE

FADE IN

OILY WATER SLAPPING AGAINST PIER PILINGS - NIGHT

We are on the waterfront near the San Pedro docks. And now
something comes floating by camera. We're not quite sure
what it is. Maybe some old rags... A hand suddenly shoots
out and grips the piling. It's a man! We can't completely
make him out in the darkness. But we know he's hurt. We
see his hand slide down the piling, into the water. And now
we hear footsteps overhead and flashlights pierce the night
- stab into the dark, scummy waters. Nothing. The ripples
of the man submerging are lost in the natural swells against
the pilings.

ANGLE - UP TO PIER

There are men up here - and they're breathing hard. But we
can't see them, just the glare from the flashlights flaring
into lens.

TOOCHIE'S VOICE
I'm tellin' ya the guy is whale
bait.

RAY'S VOICE
You better hope not or Mick is
gonna have your eyes. Shine the
light over there.

TOOCHIE
He took a bad hit. I saw him go
in... He could be halfway to the
Bermuda Triangle by now --

A voice from down on the beach suddenly calls:

MAN ON BEACH
Hey, Ray! Down here!

The flashlights spin in the direction of the beach, the two
shadowy figures hustle off, and:

CUT TO

ON THE BEACH

And it's dark. And now the flashlights train on a guy
kneeling down in the wet sand of the surf line. He stands
up, searching through a man's sport jacket. It's soaked.
The one the man in the water was wearing.

RAY
(still just
silhouettes)
That's his...he must've come out
here.

TOOCHIE
(grabbing the
jacket)
This guy went down hard! How can
he be alive like that?

RAY
Count your blessings. He can't
be far. Spread out.
(moving out)
TOOCHIE
Who is he, The Terminator? How
can he just get back up like that?

And as they disappear into the night, we:

CUT TO

ON A HUGE WAVE

as it rushes to shore, bursting in a white froth across the
sand and the sport jacket, and we:

CUT TO

A TELEPHONE BOOTH

on the waterfront. Through it we can see warehouses, a
ship's derrick - a hand suddenly grabs onto the receiver,
as though it were some sort of lifeline. The receiver is
fumbled off the hook, the person practically collapses.
Pulls himself up using the small shelf in the phone booth.
Something drips on it. It's blood. Hold as the painfully
slow dialing continues. The shelf is spotted red, and we:

CUT TO

TOTAL DARKNESS

A phone rings jarringly. Someone fumbles around in the
darkness as it jangles once more, conveying the urgency of
the call, and:

A LAMP ON A NIGHT TABLE

snaps on and the phone is real big - the camera is real
tight on it as it rings once more. LOUD. As the receiver
is fumbled off the hook we widen to reveal:

DEE DEE MCCALL

in bed, still half asleep as she brings the phone to her
ear, groaning as she checks the clock on her night stand.

DEE DEE
'Lo...
(then)
Hunter...it's after two!
(fumbling clock,
dropping it as
she checks it)
Or three...it's after something
...I figured you decided to stay
over up there.
(comes awake)
Hello...? Hunter, are you there?
What's the matter?
(then)
What kind of trouble...what
happened? You sound hurt! Where
are you?

She knocks more stuff off her night table as she locates
something to write with, a pen and notepad.

DEE DEE
You sure you don't need a
doctor-? Okay! I'm coming, on
my way!
(reacts to dial
tone)
Hello? Hello! Hunter!

And she is up and moving, slamming the phone receiver onto
its cradle, as we:

EXT. THE PHONE BOOTH ON THE WHARF - NIGHT

Close on the receiver dangling. In b.g., we see Toochie's
partners dragging Hunter's body into a windowless van. The
phone is picked up and replaced on the receiver by Toochie,
whom we get a good look at for the first time. He is a pure
albino with blinding blue eyes and scraggly hair. Charles
Manson would be scared shitless by this guy. He turns and
exits the booth.

CUT TO

THE SKY

as the night makes way for a grey dawn.

DISSOLVE TO

EXT. DEE DEE'S CAR - DAY

DAWN. McCall's car hauls ass through the streets down in
the waterfront area, finally hits the block of warehouses
near the phone booth Hunter used.

ON DEE DEE

and she's driving with a fierce determination, constantly
checking the notepad paper that has been handled to shreds
by now.

ON A PIER

Dee Dee's car comes to a screeching halt and she jumps out.
She looks around. Just the sound of the water rushing in
beneath her, the tolling of a distant buoy.

ON THE PHONE BOOTH

Hunter used to call Dee Dee. Through the glass we see Dee
Dee come around the side of the warehouse.

ON DEE DEE

She spots the phone booth and hustles across to it. As she
passes an alley between a couple warehouses, we hold...and:

A FIGURE

is hiding between the buildings. We pan up and see an
hand-tailored Saville Row double breasted suit. A silk tie.
Jet black hair, immaculately combed. Stong chiseled
features - the eyes obscured by dark, steel rimmed
sunglasses. A class act - except for the Colt Python
gripped in his gloved hand. Imported leather gloves,
naturally. We can see past him to Dee Dee as she reaches
the phone booth. She spots something, kneels down.

ON DEE DEE IN THE PHONE BOOTH

as she touches something on the floor of the booth, brings
it up to examine. Blood. Not quite dried. The look on her
face speaks volumes as she gets up and exits the phone
booth.

FROM THE ALLEY

as Dee Dee moves back along the waterfront, searching for
any sign of Hunter. Now she comes to a halt beside the
alley, looks around, and:

REVERSE - INTO THE ALLEY

empty.

DEE DEE

charges off.

ON THE PHONE BOOTH

In b.g., we see Dee Dee disappearing around the building
where she first appeared in this angle. Hold - and the man
in the suit and shades steps into shot, gives a casual
glance into the phone booth, walks off after Dee Dee.

CLOSER ON DEE DEE

as she starts walking the pier, looking for any sign of
Hunter. She turns and looks out across:

THE OCEAN

As the tide begin to run out. And there's a couple kids standing
on the rocks by the water. They're going through something they've
found and:

ON DEE DEE

as she runs up to them then climbs down a few of the rocks.

DEE DEE

Hey! Hey...what've you got there?

The two kids turn around. At first panicked, but relaxing
when they see it's just a woman.

FIRST KID

Nothing just some old jacket--

DEE DEE

Lemme have that.

FIRST KID
Kinda young for a bag lady,
aren't ya?

DEE DEE
(flashes her badge)
Hand it over, smart mouth!

FIRST KID
Sorry Miss...it...was just
floating here...sorry...

CLOSE ON DEE DEE

The kid's frantic apologies are lost. She's just going
through the sport jacket in her hands. She now looks out at
the gunmetal sea.

DEE DEE
Oh God, Hunter...where are you?

As the surf roars around her legs, we:

CUT TO

A HIGH WIDE SHOT OF DEE DEE

looking out to sea, not sure what to do. Pull back to
reveal:

THE MAN IN THE DARK SHADES

Watching Dee Dee from the pier. Watching...watching, and:

EXT. HUNTER'S HOUSE - DAY

Dee Dee's car pulls up to the curb. She gets out and starts
up to the front door. On the way she passes the mailbox and
notices the lid is open. She keeps on going up to the front
door.

AT THE FRONT DOOR

Dee Dee goes into her purse for her lockpick set, selects
the correct tool and goes to work. (BSP NOTE: stage this
so that it does not invite imitation or teach audience how
to break in.)

INT. HUNTER'S HOUSE

And the place is in the process of being ransacked. Two
guys are doing the damage - and as soon as the front
doorknob starts to jiggle they stop what they're doing and
look up.

CLOSE ON ONE OF THE GUYS

It's Toochie. His opaque eyes are as scary as we remember
them. Hold - and:

CLOSE ON THE FRONT DOOR

As Dee Dee works the lock from the outside, opens the door
and enters the house. She freezes at the sight of the
damage. It looks like a tornado has gone through the place.
Which is now empty.

DEE DEE

looks back at the door she just came through, checks the
lock and door jamb. No sign of forced entry. Her eyes dart
around, spot:

A SET OF KEYS

lying on a countertop nearby. Her hand comes into shot,
touches them, we pan back up to:

DEE DEE
Honey, you home? I'm just gonna
put the groceries away and --
Good God, what happened here?!

She kicks in the bathroom door, catching one of the hidden
intruders off guard. She's on top of the guy in a second,
ramming her gun into his chest. (BSP NOTE: No guns to be
held to head or neck.)

DEE DEE
Drop it! Drop it now!

The guym Ray, knows she's not shitting and he lets his gun
hit the tile floor. Dee Dee kicks it away, motions him out
of the bathroom.

DEE DEE
Let's go... Out!

She pushes the guy into the living room. And she comes
through the bathroom doorway and gets clobbered with a butt
of a gun, falls to the floor unconscious. (BSP NOTE: Do
not show point of impact.) Toochie looks down at her:

RAY
She came in here with a gun in
her hand. She's another cop!
She saw me and she's gotta go!

Ray has retrieved his pistol and pushes Toochie aside, aims
his gun at the unconscious Dee Dee.

TOOCHIE
You wantta kill a cop?!

RAY
Yeah, man, she can finger me for
God's sake!

ON DEE DEE

on the ground, blood running from a cut on her head. Over
her. Ray steadies his gun. Only he never gets a chance to
fire. A shot rings out and Ray is thrown back by the
bullet's impact.

TOOCHIE

spins, his own gun coming up, and he sees:

THE MAN WITH THE SHADES

in the doorway Dee Dee left open. The gun in his hand
speaks again. Toochie takes the hit in the shoulder and
gets slammed against the wall. The Python comes around for
another shot but Toochie's not waiting. He goes heading
through the window beside him.

THROUGH THE BROKEN WINDOW

Toochie gets up, ignoring the shards of glass that shower
off him, and charges off into oblivion, holding his wounded
arm.

THE MAN WITH THE SHADES

doesn't even bother to pursue. He could care less. He
crosses the room to Dee Dee and checks her pulse. Then
opens her eyes for a look. She is groaning slightly,
starting to come around. The man rises, holsters his gun
and walks out of the house as unceremoniously as he arrived.

CUT TO

EXT. HUNTER'S HOUSE - DAY

Black and whites, an ambulance and a coroner's wagon.

INT. HUNTER'S LIVING ROOM

Dee Dee is getting her head tended to by a doctor. Devane
walks around the mess in the room. As Ray's body is carted
out by the coroners:

OFFICER
(turns from the
broken window)
We've got more blood over here...

DEVANE
You did some damage around here,
McCall....

DEE DEE
I didn't do it. I don't know what
the hell happened. I'm surprised
I didn't wake up dead...

DEVANE
So we got a dead guy and maybe
another one bleeding on the street
somewhere. Maybe they started
fighting over you and took to
shooting each other.

DEE DEE
What about Hunter?

DEVANE
Nothing yet. I've got an APB out
on his car. No one at the
department knows where he's been
or what he's been up to...

DEE DEE
He went up to the federal
penitentiary at Lompoc yesterday.

DEVANE
What was he doin' at Lompoc?
Maybe that has something to do
with this.

DEE DEE
(shrugs it off)
He was just visiting an old friend
of his father's. The guy's been
locked up since Hunter was
fifteen. Hunter remembers the
guy being good to him as a
kid...playing ball with him or
something... He shoulda been back
by early evening. He was supposed
to meet me by nine.

DEVANE
Have any idea what they were
looking for here?

DEE DEE
(shakes her head;
ouch!)
Whatever it is ,...it can't be too
big. Hunter's jacket was ripped
to shreds... so it has to be
something that could have been
hidden in the lining...

DEVANE
(doesn't believe
it)
This could be just a
coincidence... a coupla guys
busted in, maybe noticed his car
was gone all night --

DEE DEE
They didn't break in.
(points to keys
on counter)
These were the guys who grabbed
him. They used his keys to get
in...

DEVANE
Which means they had plenty of
time to talk to him before they
came here. If he didn't have what
they were after on him -

DEE DEE
-He's alive.
(Devane looks at
her)
He's alive...or else I think
I'd've found his jacket floating
with him still in it.

DEVANE
If you didn't have that bump on
your head, and you weren't upset
'cause your partner's missing -
I' d wanna know what kinda
procedure you call that?
(big)
Not callin' in back-up when you
get a call from an officer in
distress!

DEE DEE
Good thing I'm in such bad shape,
huh?

DEVANE
Why the hell didn't you call in?

DEE DEE
I didn't know what kind of trouble
he was in...we got cut off so
abruptly, I...I don't know.
(hands to her head)

DEVANE
How you feelin'?

DEE DEE
Like nothing is right and my
captain's dropping bricks on me
from a high altitude.

DEVANE
You sure you don't want to go to
a hospital?
(Dee Dee just looks
at him)
Okay, go home and clean up.

DEE DEE
I'm gonna keep looking for Hunter.

DEVANE
I know that! That's why I didn't
say go home and get some rest!
Gimme a break. I'm try in' to be
a nice guy and real understanding.

Dee Dee sighs, realizes she's on edge. She grabs her bag:

CUT TO

EXT. THE UNDERGROUND - DAY

An ultra-chic boutique on Rodeo Drive. A stretch limousine
sits at the curb. A dark sedan pulls to the curb and a
steam shovel in a mohair suit gets out of the passenger
side. His name is AL. He crosses to the limo and leans in
to speak with the driver.

AL
Where's Mick?

JILLY
Spendin' this week's take on his
Kitten.

AL
Well, there was a cop down at the
club half hour ago lookin' for
him. Hunter's partner...

The driver reacts. Al looks up and reacts as:

DEE DEE

comes out from an alley and barrels down the street past
them and into THE UNDERGROUND.

AL
And there she is. This chick
operates....

Al starts to follow her into the store but Jilly grabs his
wrist to stop him. He shakes his head to Al.

CUT TO

INT. THE UNDERGROUND

Well tended people trying on lots of money. Every customer
gets their own salesperson and if you run this gauntlet and
get out with only spending a grand they put you on the
persona non grata list.

ON KITTY O'HEARN

Cosmopolitan material. She models for the
salesperson/manager and her sugar daddy, MICK SHAUGHNESSY; a
well dressed overstuffed piece of bad news seated in an
overstuffed chair. He eats it up as Kitty displays her
charms.

SHAUGHNESSY
I love it. Give her that one.

SALESWOMAN
This is a gorgeous, gorgeous
dress... and it really looks
wonderful on you. But so does
the green.

KITTY
Oh, I don't know Mick... I can't
decide.

SHAUGHNESSY
Take 'em both... Give her both.

KITTY
Maybe the purple --

SHAUGHNESSY
Nah, take 'em both.

SALESWOMAN
Don't argue with him, sweety.

Dee Dee comes barreling up:

DEE DEE
It clashes with your eyes.
(glance up and
down)
But who's gonna be looking there,
right?

SHAUGHNESSY
Lady, what's your problem?

DEE DEE
I'm here to have a chat with you,
Mister Shaughnessy. I guess in
between kidnapping cops you come
down here and dress your Barbie
doll.

KITTY
What is this, Mick? What do you
want?

DEE DEE
I want to know where my partner
is? Rick Hunter. He's been
missing since last night...
I think you helped him do that,
Shaughnessy.

SHAUGHNESSY
Lady, you're crazy. What are you
bothering me like this for?

DEE DEE
Ray Deavers turned up dead in
Hunter's apartment this morning.
I believe Ray works for you.

SALESWOMAN
Please...can we take this into
my office or -- Matter of fact,
can I see a badge or some I.D.?

As Dee Dee digs her badge out:

KITTY
Mick, why is she doing this?

SHAUGHNESSY
Don't worry about it. I'll take
care of this. You just put this
stuff on my charge. And grab a
cab. I'll call you later...

Dee Dee marches out after Shaughnessy.

CUT TO

EXT. THE UNDERGROUND - DAY

As Shaughnessy storms out of the boutique, Dee Dee hot on
his trail:

DEE DEE
You better pray to God nothin's
happened to Hunter, 'cause if it
has I'm coming after you,
Shaughnessy, and there's no hole
deep enough for you to hide in.
I'm gonna be on your back 24 hours
a day for the rest of your life.

SHAUGHNESSY
Call my lawyer. Or read me my
rights and take me in. Then you
and my lawyer can butt heads.
Otherwise, watch what you go
screaming into the
atmosphere...you'll be lookin'
down the business end of a libel
suit.
(climbing into his
limo)
Check all my businesses. I never
had any Ray Deavers on any
payroll.

DEE DEE
I'm gonna break you open, mister
- find out what your men were
looking for and what happened to
Hunter! And if he's dead, I'm
gonna strap you down inside the
gas chamber and watch you die!

Shaughnessy pulls his door closed with a slam. Dee Dee
glares at him through the tinted glass, turns and stalks
off.

INT. LIMO
Al is sitting here.

AL
Sorry, Mick, I tried to get down
here to warn you but she beat me-

SHAUGHNESSY
She knows we're looking for
something!

AL
If she knew something definite,
you'd be locked up.

SHAUGHNESSY
Thanks for the good thought. Go
find out what she knows. Take
Sid and go find out. Now!

Al climbs out of the limo.

EXT. THE UNDERGROUND - DAY

Al crosses to the sedan, climbs in beside Sid. As they pull
out toward the alley where Dee Dee entered, we hold on:

KITTY O'HEARN

watching this from the front window of the boutique. She
disappears back inside the store.

CUT TO

EXT. ALLEY - DAY

Dee Dee is walking down the alley. She still needs to blow
off more steam. So she's not paying much attention. Until
the car behind her accelerates.

DEE DEE

hears the engine rev and the tires squeal. She spins, just
manages to jump aside as the car brodies around, cutting her
off. She tires to rip the gun from her purse but Al throws
his door open and it slams into Dee Dee, sending her down
and her purse aside. Al comes around the door at her but
she manages to kick a nearby garbage pail that bowls Al
over. Dee Dee dives on her purse.

SID

is coming around the car and bringing up his gun on Dee Dee
who is just pulling hers from her purse when:

KITTY O'HEARN

comes running up behind Sid and rams a gun into his side.

KITTY

Drop the gun, Sid!

Sid freezes, starts to turn his head, incredulous:

SID
Kitty?

Kitty stops his head from turning further with a nudge from
her gun:

KITTY
I said drop it!

As Sid's gun hits the ground:

DEE DEE
Do the same, lady!

Kitty turns to see Dee Dee has her gun trained on Kitty.

DEE DEE
Down!

Kitty slowly lowers her gun to her side and gently puts it
down on the ground. She tosses her purse toward Dee Dee.

KITTY
I.D.'s in my purse...Sergeant
O'Hearn. From Hollenbeck
division.

Dee Dee takes the purse, pulls out the I.D. She looks from
the photo I.D. shield to Kitty.

KITTY
(pulls off her shoe
with a broken
heel)

Mick paid $400 for the pumps.
It's gonna just break his heart.

Hold on Kitty and Dee Dee's looks, and we:

FADE OUT

END OF ACT ONE

************************************************************

ACT TWO

FADE IN

EXT. METRO POLICE - DAY

Push in to establish.

CUT TO

INT. DEVANE'S OFFICE

Dee Dee stands over Captain Devane who is seated behind his
desk.

DEE DEE
...Those guys who tried to jump
me work for Shaughnessy. The guy
killed in Hunter's house, ditto.

DEVANE
We couldn't get the D.A. to buy
us lunch and listen to that. It's
not even thin - it's zilch.
Those guys stay dummied up,
there's no way to prove
Shaughnessy gave the order. But
I do agree he's our best lead.

DEE DEE
Great...'cause I'm gonna take
Shaughnessy down for the count
on this one -

DEVANE
I bet. But I don't want you
flying solo with a dangerous crud
like that, so I'm gonna assign
you a partner.

DEE DEE
I've got a partner. Until
official notification of death,
Hunter's my partner.

DEVANE
Don't duke it out with me, McCall.
You'll lose. And this is not one
I want to see you go down on.

Dee Dee pulls in some lungfuls of air, nods.

DEE DEE
I'm sorry...I...I just want to
have the freedom to move.

She goes to sit down.

DEVANE
And I don't want you to fall too
far across the rule book because
of your personal involvement. And
this Sergeant O'Hearn from
Hollenbeck division has been on
Shaughnessy for a while...

Dee Dee stops with her butt just short of the couch.

DEE DEE
(rising)
No ... no, no, no, no, no ...

DEVANE
I spoke to her captain this
morning. He says Kitty's a good
cop, been working undercover for
them for two years.

DEE DEE
Kitty O'Hearn? Kitty O'Hearn and
Dee Dee. We sound like a bad tap
dancing act on Star Search.
(off Devane's look)
I just don't think it's gonna
work, Charlie. I'm gonna be
trying to find my partner, she's
gonna be checking her nail polish.

DEVANE
Hey! What's with you! She pulled
your biscuits out this
morning... even blew her cover
doing it. And she musta worked
real hard to get in tight with
Shaughnessy. She knows him inside
out.

DEE DEE
There's a news bulletin.

DEVANE
I'll keep those two goons you
busted going through revolving
doors as long as possible.
If Shaughnessy can't get to them
it'll keep the heat off Kitty.
(as Dee Dee shakes
her head and turns
to leave)

I hope you're not displaying signs
of prejudice here, Sergeant
McCall. You have a problem
working with a woman?
(Dee Dee shoots
him a look)
I pride myself on the department
being totally non-segregated, a
full brotherhood and sisterhood
of police officers.

Dee Dee crosses toward the door and grabs the knob:

DEVANE
And she's not gonna be doing her
nails.

DEE DEE
You're right...that was a cheap
shot.

And as Dee Dee exits, closing the door behind her, we:

CUT TO

EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY

Dee Dee and Kitty exit the precinct. Kitty is a knockout in
stretch pants and a loose, white blouse cinched at the waist
by a wide, studded belt.

KITTY
...I've been part of Mick
Shaughnessy's stable for almost
two months now, and he spent half
that time moaning and groaning
about Hunter.

DEE DEE
(dryly)
I can't imagine what he spent the
other half of his time moaning
and groaning over.

KITTY
Yeah, Mick sure likes his women.
That's why I was able to convince
the Captain to let me go in.
After a couple surveillances it
was easy to see what made
Shaughnessy roll over like a
puppy. So I got the department
to go for this eight hundred
dollar dress, a Norma Kamali...
Really cut tight in here and ... I
mean, you should really go try
some of her stuff. You'd look
great in--

DEE DEE
We're talkin' about Shaughnessy.

KITTY
Right. I went down to his club.
Chased away the right amount of
guys, let Mick see how much of
me was leg. He homed in and this
led to that and that led to this-

DEE DEE
-And you and Mick are out buyin'
his favorite high heels and
matching bikini.
(then)
It's a dirty job but someone has
to do it.

KITTY
Something like that....

Kitty crosses in front of Dee Dee and stops her.

KITTY
Look, Dee, I don't really know
you... but I've heard about you.
Your rep in the department is damn
good. And I know you're bummed out
by what may have happened to your
partner... so you call it. I
just want to help.

Dee Dee looks at her, softens.
She realizes she's been uptight.

DEE DEE
I'm sorry if I've been...
(trails off)
Look, I know first hand how hard
it is to work your way into
someone's confidence. I really
do appreciate you blowing your
cover this morning to save my
butt.

KITTY
We're gonna find out what happened
to Hunter.
(Dee Dee nods)

As they move toward the cars again:

KITTY
Would you mind driving?

DEE DEE
No.

KITTY
Great...
(holds up her hand)
'Cause I want to fix these two
nails...

Dee Dee breaks her stride for a beat, sighs, and climbs into
her car.

CUT TO

EXT. STREET - DAY

As Dee Dee's car pulls out of the parking compound and
drives up the block - we pull back to reveal we are:

INT. A BLACK PORSCHE 928

And the Man With The Shades watches Dee Dee's car go by.
The tinted glass window glides up, and:

EXT. BLACK PORSCHE 928 - DAY
The car pulls a U-turn and picks up the tail.

INT. DEE DEE'S CAR

Dee Dee is driving; beside her Kitty works on her nails with
a file and an opened bottle of polish balanced on her
thighs.

DEE DEE
I want to head downtown...see if
we can find a crooked doctor.
(Kitty looks at
Dee Dee)
I don't know if you had a chance
to read the report...but I think
one of the guys who was tossing
Hunter's place took a hit. There
haven't been any reports from
local hospitals or doctors... If
the guy was hurt bad enough to
need help, he night have a doctor
who'd forget he pulled a bullet
out of someone.

KITTY
You think they still haven't found
what they were after?

DEE DEE
The place was pretty wrecked when
I got there...and they hadn't left
so I must have interrupted their
search.

KITTY
I don't know how you can tell.
Rick's not exactly Mister
Immaculate.

DEE DEE
(looks over at
Kitty who is still
working on her
nails)
You know Hunter?

KITTY
(examining her
handiwork)
Huh? Oh...well, yeah. When
Hunter was on loan to my division
a few years ago, on that string
of prostitute murders. We got
together to compare notes and...
(shrugs)
Y'know, this led to that--

DEE DEE AND KITTY
--and that led to this.

KITTY
(nods; holds up
her hand)
That's a good color for me isn't
it?

CUT TO

EXT. CADILLAC JACK'S - DAY

This place used to be a bar. Now it's a health hazard with
a liquor license. Dee Dee's car pulls up.

INT. DEE DEE'S CAR

She puts the car in PARK but sits there for a minute,
watching her sideview mirror.

KITTY
(starts to get out,
stops)
Something wrong?

DEE DEE
For some reason, I thought we were
being followed.

KITTY
The Porsche 928?

DEE DEE
(reacts)
Yeah...

KITTY
I thought so too but he turned
off about three blocks back.

Kitty climbs out of the car. Dee Dee can't help being
impressed. She climbs out also.

CUT TO

INT. CADILLAC JACK'S

Barstools with cracked vinyl seatcovers showing plenty of
stuffing, no-pest fly strips and, mounted on the wall, a
black and white portable television with a picture that
never stops rolling.

KITTY

enters and even the lowlifes know she's better than most of
the good ones. As Kitty makes her way through a room of
roaming eyes and smacking lips, Dee Dee enters and hustles
up to Kitty.

DEE DEE
That approach isn't gonna get us
much in here, except a lot of
attempted rape.

KITTY
What're you talking about?

DEE DEE
Your hips're moving like they're
on ballbearings.

KITTY
Sorry...it's not intentional.

DEE DEE
(rolls her eyes)
God help me.

Dee Dee crosses to a couple guys playing pool.

ON T-BONE WILLIAMS
A huge black guy in a stocking cap who is lining up a shot.

DEE DEE
How ya doin', T-Bone?

T-Bone's eyes glide up Kitty's frame. He misses his shot.

T-BONE
(watching Kitty
lean against the
pool table)
Better and better....

DEE DEE
(snaps her fingers
in front of him)
Focus over here, maestro.

T-Bone's buddies have all gathered closely around Kitty.
She smiles at them as she flashes her badge. One of them
grabs his heart in pain.

T-BONE
I'm talkin' to you...I'm just
lookin' over there.

T-Bone goes to line up another shot - aiming so Kitty is
right in his eyeline.

DEE DEE
I need the name of a doctor.

T-BONE
Check the phone book under M.D.

DEE DEE
I mean a witch doctor. Someone
who can't remember when he
stitches up a knife wound or
patches a bullet hole.

T-BONE
I am an upright, law abiding
citizen who is a member of
Plumbers' Local 767 and I get all
my medical handled by my union-

T-Bone goes to shoot and Dee Dee slams a pool cue across
T-Bone's hand. (BSP NOTE: Do not show point of impact.)
He lets out a howl as he jumps back.

DEE DEE
The only union you belong to is
this group a' Reggae mouth
breathers who help you push dope
for Tony No Smoke over on Tenth
Street.

T-BONE
(holding his hand)
You startin' to sound just like
your partner!

DEE DEE
And things are gonna get a whole
lot worse before they get better.
Now...I want the names of some
shady sawbones or what I do is
break that other hand for you,
then put a bullet in your leg and
watch who you crawl to.

Hold T-Bone's worried look, and:

CUT TO

EXT. CADILIAC JACK'S - DAY

Dee Dee and Kitty exit. Dee Dee going over a piece of paper
with a couple names scrawled on it.

KITTY
Do you always come on like the
last reel in a John Wayne movie?

DEE DEE
I got what I wanted.

KITTY
I've just never operated like
that. You fascinate me.

DEE DEE
(just looks at her;
then)
Okay...we've got a Doctor Stevens
works out of a clinic in the
Mission district. We cross this
Pete Tomlins off the list, he got
picked up for dealing last
month...a guy named Panghurst over
on Crescent -

KITTY
--Panghurst! That's the guy!

DEE DEE
You know him?

KITTY
I'm sure Mick mentioned him once.
I've heard the name and I'm almost
positive it was from Mick. I
think one of his boys got cut up
in a fight...they needed someone
who wouldn't report it to the
cops. I'm positive Panghurst was
the name of the doctor they
called.

DEE DEE
Let's get an appointment.

They climb into the car. As they do, Dee Dee looks up and
down the block.

KITTY
No black Porsches.

Dee Dee shrugs, guess they were wrong? As they pull out:

INT. CADILLAC JACK'S/REAR ENTRANCE

T-Bone is dropping change into a payphone with his one good
hand, dialing and fumbling the receiver to his ear.

T-BONE
(into phone)
Yeah, lemme speak to the doctor.
(listens)
No, I don't want a damned
Appointment! Just tell him Cyrus
Williams is on the phone. T-Bone!
Say it's T-Bone.
(big)
Just tell him, lady!

And as T-Bone holds - a man comes walking down the narrow
corridor. T-Bone squeezes aside to let the guy through to
the MEN'S ROOM. But the guy doesn't squeeze past. He grabs
T-Bone and slams his back up against the wall.

T-BONE
Hey!

The Colt Python that gets rammed up into his side shuts
T-Bone up. The Man With The Shades reaches out with his
gloved hand, takes the dangling receiver and places it to
his ear:

WOMAN'S VOICE ON PHONE
Doctor Panghurst will be right
with you, sir......

The Man With The Shades calmly hangs up the phone. T-Bone
stands there like a brilliant piece of taxidermy. The Man
With The Shades takes T-Bone's arm and pushes him back into
the Men's Room. As they disappear from sight, and the door
closes:

CUT TO

EXT. A GLASS AND CHROME OFFICE BUILDING - DAY

Dee Dee's car wipes camera and pulls into the underground
parking structure.

INT. DOCTOR PANGHURST'S OFFICE/RECEPTION AREA

Dee Dee and Kitty are in the waiting room and a young
charmer in doctor's whites is busy trying to hustle Kitty
who calmly continues to flip through her N.D. magazine:

KITTY
No, really, I'd like to wait for
Doctor Panghurst....

TIM
He's running a little behind.
I'm willing to take you right
now... You've never been to us
before, I guess, and --

DEE DEE
Down, boy. She'd like to wait
for Doctor Panghurst.

Dee Dee fries him with a smile. Tim shrugs and crosses
toward the examination rooms.

DEE DEE
(looks at Kitty
who just thumbs
her magazine)
C'mon...some of that has to bother
you.

KITTY
(shrugs)
It's only friendly sparring. I
guess you just figure it's part
of the deal. You must get it all
the time.

DEE DEE
Yeah, well... I... yeah.

And Dee Dee picks up a magazine she could care less about,

DOCTOR PANGHURST

exits a room with a patient. Panghurst is about fifty,
distinguished looking, silvering hair.

PANGHURST
(leads the patient
to reception)
Peg, make an appointment for Mrs.
Atherton to come back in one week.
We'll see how it's going.

ON DEE DEE AND KITTY

as Dee Dee nudges Kitty. She looks up as Panghurst turns
from the receptionist and crosses to Kitty:

PANGHURST
Miss O'Hearn? Would you care to
come this way?

Kitty and Dee Dee both stand. Pangburst gives McCall a
questioning look. McCall shows Panghurst her badge, keeping
it hidden from anyone else in the office.

DEE DEE
Doctor, I'd like to come along
if that's okay with you.

Pangburst looks at the badge, reacts.

PANGHURST
Well...uh...I guess so.

And he gestures them to follow him.

CUT TO

INT. EXAMINATION ROOM
Kitty and Dee Dee follow Doctor Panghurst into the room.

MCCALL
In case you want to know who
recommended us. Doctor, it was
T-Bone Williams.

Panghurst reacts, looks up from Kitty's chart, covering:

PANGHURST
(a chuckle)
Who... ?

DEE DEE
Would you like to try another
name? How about Mick
Shaughnessy.

PANGHURST
I certainly know Mister
Shaughnessy...What's this about?

DEE DEE
It's about doing patchwork for
criminals. I hear tell you'll
fix someone up, no questions
asked. I'm wondering if you did
that recently. Say someone who
works for Big Mick Shaughnessy.

PANGHURST
How dare you come in here and
accuse me of...anything illegal.
I am a well respected professional
in my field.

DEE DEE
We'll find that out, Doc. I'm
gonna run a sheet on you and see
what turns up. See if you
practiced anywhere else. Like
the city Shaughnessy came from
- like Detroit.

KITTY
Yeah, how about that? You
wouldn't be from Detroit, would
you, Doctor?

PANGHURST
(tightly)
Yes, I would. And this entire
discussion disgusts and insults
me! My attorney is Harv Kitchel
at Abraros, Young and Kitchel.
If you have anything further to
say, say it to him.

DEE DEE
You could be involved in the
disappearance of a police
detective, Doctor Panghurst.
Something like that doesn't go
away. And neither do I.

Dee Dee exits the room. Kitty offers up a consoling smile.

KITTY
We'll call ahead next time,
Doctor. Thank you for seeing us.

Kitty exits. Hold on Panghurst - and he is starting to
sweat.

CUT TO

INT. RECEPTION AREA

Tim is here checking on something with the receptionist as
Dee Dee and Kitty pass through. Tim turns and has a big
smile for Kitty. Dee Dee looks into the receptionist's
cubicle. A light on the phone bank blinks on. She smiles,

TIM
That was quick. I'm glad nothing
too big was the matter. Was
Doctor Panghurst worth the wait?

KITTY
He was terrific. Maybe I'll see
you next time.

TIM
Get sick soon.

Dee Dee takes Kitty's arm and leads her out.

CUT TO

INT. CORRIDOR
as Dee Dee and Kitty exit the doctor's offices:

KITTY
I don't know if dropping on
everyone like a load of wet cement
is the way to handle things across
the board --

DEE DEE
This is the way I want to handle
things. I've been doing fine with
my methods for years...

KITTY
Okay...I just know you're uptight.
You might be pushing a little hard

DEE DEE
I just didn't have the time to
go shopping at Norma Kamali's,
okay?

Dee Dee pulls Kitty into the stairwell, keeps the door
cracked so she can see Panghurst's office.

INT. STAIRWELL

KITTY
Whatever works for you, fine.
I just prefer a more feminine
touch in some ways -

DEE DEE
The feminine touch is okay by me
too. I can be as feminine as the
next one --
(catches herself)
Listen to me...why am I having
this discussion? Look, I wanted
to push hard, okay. If Panghurst's
got any exposed nerves, he'll
make a move.

The door of Panghurst's office starts to open. Panghurst
exits and crosses to the elevator.

DEE DEE
There you go. We hit his buttons.
He's running to somebody.

Dee Dee turns and starts down the staircase. Kitty hustles
after her.

CUT TO

EXT. CRUMMY PARKING LOT - DAY

Panghurst heads through the garage to his car, parked in a
row against the wall.

DEE DEE'S CAR
Dee Dee runs to her car, gets in. Kitty hops in beside her.

KITTY
I almost broke my ankle in these
things...

The sound of a super charged engine from o.s. and Dee Dee
sags:

DEE DEE
(shit)
Great...

HER POV - PANGHURST'S CAR
is a Ferrari. It hauls ass out of the garage.

DEE DEE
puts it in gear and takes off after it.

EXT. STREETS - DAY - THE CHASE

If you can call it that. Once Panghurst hits it there's not
much Dee Dee can do. He goes weaving in and out of traffic,
taking the corners tighter than Dee Dee can, until finally,
Panghurst cuts across two lanes of traffic and jumps on the
freeway. Dee Dee misses the exit and can't reverse because
of traffic. Her car squeals to a halt.

INT. DEE DEE'S CAR

She punches the steering wheel in frustration.

KITTY
Dammit!

DEE DEE
Gimme a break! How was I gonna
catch a Ferrari?

KITTY
Listen, I've got an idea...take
me back to the Doctor's office.
I think we can find out where he
is.

McCall hits the accelerator and takes off as we:

ACT THREE

INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE

Kitty sits waiting in DOCTOR TIM DONALDSON'S office, her
legs crossed, her blouse down off one shoulder. Tim enters
and starts salivating.

TIM
Sorry, Kitty...your sunglasses
aren't in the examination room
either.

KITTY
Maybe I left them at
Neiman-Marcus. I hope not. I
should buy two pair next
time...one to wear and one just
to lose the way I'm always
misplacing them.

TIM
Doctor Panghurst's not here, maybe
he found them and put them
someplace.

KITTY
Maybe he was going to bring them
with him tonight? Well, thanks
again, you've been too kind...

TIM
Oh...You, uh...you gonna see Dave
tonight?

KITTY
We're having dinner.

TIM
Lucky Dave.

KITTY
Aren't you sweet.

TIM
Here I was, playing it real cool
and laid back and old Panghurst
snakes in. Not that Dave is
old...this is good for Dave...
He and Dorothy have been together
for so long, It's good he's
starting to date.

KITTY
Dorothy his ex?

TIM
Not really his ex. I mean,
they're separated but...I kinda
think there's a chance they'll
get back together. Dave is a good
guy.

KITTY
You seem like a good guy, too.

TIM
You'd know better if you had
dinner with me.

KITTY
What would I tell Dave?

Kitty looks at Tim. He looks at her and realizes she's
willing to negotiate in his favor. Tim smiles.

TIM
Something'll come to you. You
should always get a second opinion
in these matters.

KITTY
It's tempting, but...I'm going
to be gone most of the day. If
he's not in, I have no way to
cancel. He's supposed to pick
me up by eight.

TIM
You could leave him a note...

KITTY
I couldn't do that. That would
be rude. You wouldn't want me
to do that to you?

She starts out.

TIM
Wait...uh...let me beep him. Then
he'll call in.

KITTY
Maybe this is getting too
complicated--

TIM
-Not at all. We always beep
him...he'll call right in. I have
to take care of a patient. When
he calls in I'll have Peg put it
in here. Then we'll figure out
tonight.

KITTY
(dimpled smile)
Sounds good.

And Tim is out the door, almost tripping over himself,
Kitty moves to the phone on the desk and picks up the
receiver.

CUT TO

INT. DEE DEE'S CAR

Parked in front of Panghurst's building. Dee Dee'S radio
squawks to life and she snatches up the mike:

DISPATCHER
(filtered)
L-57, we have a patch through
from Officer O'Hearn.

DEE DEE
This is L-57, go ahead.

KITTY
(over radio)
Dee... They're gonna beep him.

He should call in in the next ten,
fifteen minutes.

DEE DEE
Great, that'll give me time to
call the telephone company and
put a trace on the call.

CUT TO

EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE - DAY

It's early evening and the place is closed. Shaughnessy's
limo is parked here. Along with Touchie's van and
Panghurst's Ferarri. Hick's driver, Jilly, smokes a
cigarette.

INT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE

Shaughnessy paces while Toochie doesn't know what to do
with his hands except wipe his nose every few seconds. This
guy runs on pure methane.

SHAUGHNESSY
(grabs a phone)
Lemme try Kitty again. What the
hell happened to her?

Before he can finish dialing, a door opens and Panghurst
exits a room. We glimpse a small folding cot with someone
on it.

SHAUGHNESSY
(hangs up and spins
on Panghurst)
So how is he? He looks paler than
Toochie. He's not gonna die, is
he? He can't die yet.

PANGHURST
I'm surprised he's doing as well
as he is. The man is strong.
But he should be in a hospital.

SHAUGHNESSY
Oh, yeah, maybe I'll make a
donation and open a wing at
Cedars. I can keep everyone there
I'm trying' to get information
out of.

PANGHURST
Look, you say you've got to keep
the guy alive. I'm giving you
a medical opinion. You keep him
here, I'm not sure he's gonna make
it.

SHAUGHNESSY
How about givin' him another
shot'a that sodium pentathol
stuff?

PANGHURST
That's not a cure! Any more of
that stuff and you'll turn him
into a zombie. He told you what
you wanted to know. He sent
himself a package registered mail.
What else do you need?!

Panghurst's beeper starts to go off. He clicks it off,
picks up a phone, punches in some numbers.

As Panghurst waits for his call to connect:

CUT TO

INT. TIM DONALDSON'S OFFICE

The intercom beeps and Kitty stops primping her hair in the
mirror to pick up the receiver.

KITTY
Hello?

RECEPTIONIST'S VOICE
(over intercom)
Doctor Panghurst is on the phone.
Just pick up line three.

KITTY
(picks up the
telephone and
punches the
button)
Hello, Doctor Panghurst?

INT. SLAUGHTERHOUSE - ON PANGHURST

Intercut with Kitty as needed;

PANGHURST
Yes?

KITTY
This is Detective Sergeant
O'Hearn, Doctor.

Panghurst reacts to Kitty's voice, but not enough to tip
Shaugnessy.

PANGHURST
I see. Where's Doctor Donaldson?

KITTY
He was sweet enough to place the
call for me. I really think you
and I should meet and have a talk,
Doctor --

PANGHURST
Do everything you can for her,
Evelyn, I'll be right there.
(is about to hang
up)

KITTY
You should know, Shaughnessy might
be throwing you to the wolves.

Panghurst reacts, glances over at Shaughnessy.

KITTY (CONT'D)
Maybe he needs a scapegoat,
someone he can sacrifice. Maybe
he wants us on your trail instead
of his, wasting time investigating
somebody else.

PANGHURST
All right, I'm on my way to the
hospital right now.

Pangborn hangs up the phone, looks over to Shaugnessy.

CUT TO

EXT. DEE DEE'S CAR - DAY

Dee Dee is hanging up her microphone as Kitty comes hustling
out of the building and jumps into the car:

KITTY
I did my best to keep him on the
line...Were you able to find out
where he was calling from?

DEE DEE
No, all we got was the prefix 565,
that's the Piedmont District.

KITTY
Mick Shaughnessy owns a warehouse
he uses when he needs a place like
that. It's on Edmonton in the
Piedmont District.

Dee Dee and Kitty exchange a look. McCall wheels out.

CUT TO

INT. CAPTAIN DEVANE'S OFFICE
Devane is rising out of his chair, still on the phone:

DEVANE
Right...gotcha. Backup'll be on
the way. I'm comin' down myself.

Devane slams down the phone and grabs his jacket on the way
out.

INT. BULLPEN

Devane comes out of his office and jumps on a police
officer:

DEVANE
I want black and whites rolling
on a warehouse at 724 Edmonton.
They're backup for Unit L-57.
I want 'em there before I get out
of this building.

Devane spins to charge out, comes up short with:

DEVANE
Oh...Special Agent Ringerman...
I'm sorry...

ON SPECIAL AGENT RINGERMAN
He is the Man With The Shades.

DEVANE
Look...I know you're waiting to
see me but something just came
up...it has to do with the
possible homicide of a police
officer...

RINGERMAN
(a barracuda smile)
I understand, Captain. Perhaps
I could speak to someone else?

DEVANE
I'll have them send you over to
Deputy Chief Wyler. I'm sure
he'll be able to help you with
whatever you need... Thanks...

And Devane charges out. Hold on Ringerman who watches him
go. Then Ringerman turns and enters Devane's office, out of
earshot. He picks up the phone on the Captain's desk and
dials.

CUT TO

INT. SLAUGHTERHOUSE - THROUGH THE SIDES OF BEEF

the slaughterhouse low and fast, guns drawn.

KITTY
Nothing. The place is empty.

DEE DEE
He was here. They had Hunter
here.

KITTY
What....?

Dee Dee shows Kitty there is sand in amongst the sheets.

DEE DEE
Sand...he was at the beach when
they grabbed him.

KITTY
Then he's alive...? Why would
they be keeping him alive? And
how'd they know to move him?

Dee Dee just shakes her head. Sirens approach outside.
Kitty goes to say something else, decides not to. She
turns and leaves.

CLOSE ON DEE DEE

seated on the cot, the blood soaked sheets in her lap.

Be all right, you bum...be all

EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE - DAY

A black and white unit, gumballs flashing, comes to a sudden
stop, joining several other units parked in front of the
warehouse. Two uniformed officers inside the unit leap out
and hurry inside the place.

INT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE

In the B.G., uniformed officers are searching the warehouse,
going over every inch of it. McCall is on the phone,
finishing a conversation as Kitty enters to her.

DEE DEE
(on phone)
Do me a favor, Barney, give
Devane a call and tell him the
news. Thanks.
(hangs up phone;
to Kitty)
That was the M.E. He ran a test
- it's definitely Hunter's blood
type on the sheets.

KITTY
Yeah, but why? Why would Hick
Shaughnessy need to keep Hunter
alive so badly?

McCall begins walking toward the exit as Kitty follows.

DEE DEE
I don't know...but what I'm
going to do is take a run up to
Lompoc.

KITTY
I thought he was just up there
visiting an old friend of his
father's?

DEE DEE
I've got nothing else to go on.
But I was with him till he left
work Friday night to drive up
there. So whatever happened to
him must've started up there...
It's as good a shot as any. You
feel like the drive?

KITTY
I think I can do better if I give
big Mick a call.

Dee Dee stops walking, turns to Kitty.

DEE DEE
What are you talking about?

KITTY
We've got a dead end...Lompoc is
just a guess right now. We know
Shaughnessy's in this. I can work
him from the inside.

DEE DEE
But you don't know if you have
a cover anymore.

KITTY
As long as Sid and Al haven't been
released, I'm cool. Mick knows
me as ditzy Kitty O'Hearn.
Believe me, I know how much the
guy digs me.

DEE DEE
I don't think that's a way to
go...

KITTY
Look, Dee...I appreciate your
concern. But I want to find
Rick. I think this is our best
shot.

DEE DEE
(a beat)
How well do you know Hunter?

KITTY
Enough to know how he felt about
you. How you feel about each
other.

DEE DEE
We're partners. Y'know, you work
together... I mean... we're
partners...

They just look at each other as we

INT. RECEIVING AREA
Dee Dee is at the desk, displaying her I.D.

DEE DEE
Sergeant Dee Dee McCall. Los
Angeles Metropolitan Police. I'm
here to see Maury DiLeo.

Dee Dee nods, removes her gun from her purse and the backup
from her leg as the Guard looks up his file.

GUARD

INT. PRISON INFIRMARY

About half the beds are filled. Dee Dee enters and crosses
to the Head Nurse at her desk.

DEE DEE
I'm Sergeant McCall. I'm here
to see Maury DiLeo.

HEAD NURSE
Oh...Mister DiLeo died about ten
o'clock this morning. He's been
sick for quite some time.

Push in on Dee Dee and hold.

CUT TO

EXT. KITTY'S HOUSE - DAY

Kitty comes out of her house, looking smart in her
mini-dress. She breaks stride when she sees Shaughnessy's
limo parked at the curb. Mick is leaning against it.

KITTY
Mick, honey...I was just coming
to see you. I just called your
club and asked for you...

SHAUGHNESSY
I just checked in and got the
message. I been worried sick.
I been goin' crazy lookin' for
you.

KITTY
Everything's just been so insane.
After that whole thing at The
underground's I got home to get
a message that my Mom is sick...
(she slides into
limo)

INT. REAR OF LIMO
As Shaughnessy gets in beside Kitty.

SHAUGHNESSY
Nothin' serious I hope...

But Kitty is frozen. She is facing Al and Sid.

SHAUGHNESSY
Isn't this good news! Sid and
Al are back. And guess what they
told me.

Kitty's hand tries to open her purse but Al snatches it from
her. Shaughnessy pins her to her seat. Al pulls the gun
from her purse. (BSP NOTE: Caution on excessive
violence.)

SHAUGHNESSY
(holding her by
the hair)
I gotta hurt you baby.

INT. PRISON INFIRMARY
Dee Dee finishes talking with the Head Nurse.

DEE DEE
Thank you...you've been a big
help, really. Thanks.

Dee Dee turns to exit and bumps into:

SPECIAL AGENT RINGERMAN

wearing his shades.

DEE DEE
Excuse me...

RINGERMAN
Sergeant McCall?

DEE DEE
Yes... ?

Ringerman removes his shades, smiles at Dee Dee.

RINGERMAN
I'm Federal Agent Ringerman. I
believe you might be able to help
me.

Hold, and:

CUT TO

EXT. LOMPOC PRISON - DAY

De" Dee and Ringerman stride through the parking lot.

RINGERMAN
Maury DiLeo was one of the major
players through the early sixties.
He knows more about what went on
then, and even what's going on
now, than half the people still
at large. He's been a special
project of nine... trying to get
him to talk before he signed up
for harp lessons.

DEE DEE
Well, I think he did talk. The
nurse said the last few days while
DiLeo was in the hospital he was
doing a lot of talking into a
small portable cassette recorder.
Maybe burning all the wise guys
he knows. And I'll bet you Mick
Shaughnessy was one'a them.

RINGERMAN
Why now? After all these years
of keeping his mouth shut?

DEE DEE
He knew he was dying. The nurse
said he asked to see the priest
every day. Maybe he found God.
Maybe he was still looking and
figured it was his best shot to
win a box seat in heaven.

RINGERMAN
If he did have a history with your
partner...knowing Hunter's dad,
he might be the guy he'd trust.

DEE DEE
The last place my partner was seen
was here, with DiLeo. I think
DiLeo gave him that
Cassette.

RINGERMAN
But if Shaughnessy grabbed Hunter
then Shaughnessy has it.

DEE DEE
Then Hunter'd be dead - which
he's not. So Hunter didn't have
the cassette on him. And they
need him alive to get it. When
Hunter realized what DiLeo was
giving him, as protection, he
could have made a fast stop at
the nearest post office and mailed
the cassette to himself.

RINGERMAN
(reacts)
Yes, and if he sent it some kind
of registered nail, it would take
I.D. and a signature to get it
- in other words. Hunter
himself.

DEE DEE
It has to be something like that.
That's a reason to risk everything
keeping a wounded cop alive.

INT. DEVANE'S OFFICE
Devane is on the phone with Dee Dee.

DEVANE
...That sounds like the missing
piece. So Hunter could definitely
be alive.

ON DEE DEE IN THE PHONE BOOTH
Intercut with Devane as needed.

DEE DEE
I think he has to be, Captain.
DiLeo's testimony could cripple
half the west coast syndicate.

DEVANE
I hadda figure it was something
that big... The Feds have popped
up in this one.

DEE DEE
Yeah, I know...

DEVANE
I don't understand what the game
is, though. A special agent
named Ringerman somehow or other
got Wyler to spring those two
jokers you and Kitty busted. So
you two keep close to one another.

DEE DEE
Oh, my God....

DEVANE
What's the matter?

ON DEE DEE

As Ringerman's gloved hand snaps the receiver hook down.
Dee Dee spins and finds Ringerman's Python pointed at her.

CUT TO:

THE PORSCHE 928

parked in the lot.

DEE DEE

turns and looks at Ringerman.

DEE DEE
Nice car for a Fed.

CUT TO

EXT. THE PORSCHE 928 - DAY

It streaks by camera.

INT. PORSCHE 928

Dee Dee is driving. Ringerman sits beside her, his Colt
Python comfortably trained on her. He uses his other hand
to pull her gun from the purse. He flips open the cylinder,
dumps the cartridges out and tosses the gun into the back
seat.

RINGERMAN
So how's she handle?

DEE DEE
You were the wild card. I
couldn't figure out all the
players... All the time you were
playing both ends against the
middle. You killed Shaughnessy's
man at Hunter's.

RINGERMAN
You owe me. He was about to blow
you away.

DEE DEE
I'll send you a fruit basket.

She tenses as Ringerman reaches across to her leg.
Ringerman rams the gun in her side to keep her from trying
anything. He removes Dee Dee's backup piece and, like
before, dumps the cartridges and tosses the gun into the
back seat.

DEE DEE
(looks at him)
Did you find out we were gonna
roust Shaughnessy's warehouse?
(Ringerman just
smiles)
You're the one who tipped him.

RINGERMAN
I didn't know who was going to
get DiLeo's deathbed statement
first. Shaughnessy had Hunter... I
knew if Shaughnessy got that
statement he'd destroy it. I kept
my eye on you, in case Hunter sent
it to you.

DEE DEE
So you could destroy it. Either
way was okay by you. Because
you're a wrong number or you
wouldn't be pointing a gun at me.
You're probably on that tape and
that's why DiLeo has been a
personal occupation of yours.

Ringerman says nothing.

RINGERMAN
We'll have that tape within the
hour.

DEE DEE
I'm just a cop. Even I can't
get at a registered package
without a warrant.

RINGERMAN
I know. It's Federal property.
Which is right up my
jurisdictional alley.

EXT. THE PORSCHE 928 - DAY

As it zooms over camera and away, we:

CUT TO

EXT. U.S. POST OFFICE, OCEAN PARK BRANCH - DAY

Toochie's windowless van pulls into the rear loading zone
area.

INT. VAN

Toochie is at the wheel. Shaughnessy is in the passenger
seat. In back, an armed Al watches Kitty and the
unconscious form of Hunter.

Toochie is at the wheel. Shaughnessy is in the passenger
seat. Al appears from the back where he's watching Kitty
and the unconscious form of Hunter.

AL
This guy don't look all that
brisk, it ain't gonna work. You
gotta let me go in there, sign
his name and pick it up.

SHAUGHNESSY
Damn it, Al, we been all through
this! - if they know what Hunter
looks like, we're dead!

AL
Mick, if Hunter walks in there,
no way are they gonna give 'im
that package. He looks half dead
- they ain't gonna give 'im
nothin'. You take a chance on
me or kiss off the whole deal.

Shaughnessy thinks it over fast, hates Al's idea, but
doesn't have any alternatives.

SHAUGHNESSY
Okay, we'll give it a shot. But
I'm goin' in with you.
(opens door to
climb out)
Tooch, keep the engine runnin'

As he climbs out he notions at Kitty:

SHAUGHNESSY
Put her up here with Toochie.

Al takes Kitty by the arm and shoves her forward into the
passenger seat. Toochie smiles at her with his blank eyes.
He keeps a gun trained on her midriff:

SHAUGHNESSY
You better be on your best
behavior...

Kitty's eyes go past Shaughnessy. She reacts:

KITTY
(cutting in)
Looks like you're wasting your
time, Mick. There's Hunter's
partner. I think she already has
what you want.

Shaughnessy turns.

HIS POV - DEE DEE AND RINGERMAN

exiting the post office, crossing toward the Porsche. Dee
Dee carries a small parcel. Ringerman has an overcoat
draped across his arm - concealing the Python we know is
there.

ON SHAUGHNESSY

as Al jumps out of the back of the van and crosses around.

SHAUGHNESSY
C'mon!

They move off.

INT. VAN

Kitty looks out the window at Shaughnessy and Al moving on
Dee Dee and Ringerman. Suddenly Toochie grabs her and yanks
her close, his hot breath on her cheek.

TOOCHIE
We're gonna be good friends,
honey. I always wanted to make
it with a cop.

His hand runs up her thigh. Kitty flinches.

CLOSE - TOOCHIE'S GUN
rams into her side.

TIGHT - ON TOOCHIE AND KITTY

TOOCHIE
Don't flinch!

Toochie kisses her. She tries not to squirm. Not to show
her fear and disgust.

TOOCHIE
I thought cops was supposed to
be something special.

He kisses her again, his body pressed tightly to hers.

ON KITTY'S LEG

her foot inching toward the accelerator.

TIGHT - TOOCHIE AND KITTY

as he slobbers on her face and neck, and:

KITTY'S HAND

rests on the gearshift. Suddenly rams it down, as:

KITTY'S FOOT

floors the accelerator, and:

THE VAN

bucks forward, slamming into a mail truck.

TOOCHIE AND KITTY

get thrown against the windshield, Toochie's gun skittering
to the back of the van, and:

EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY

Everyone reacts to the crash, including Dee Dee and
Ringerman, Shaughnessy and Al. Dee Dee spots Shaughnessy.

DEE DEE
That's Shaughnessy!

Shaughnessy hears his name called out, spins on Ringerman
and Dee Dee, his gun coming up. He tries to get off a shot
but he doesn't have a chance. Ringerman shoots him,
blowing Shaugnessy off his feet, severely wounded, taking
him out of action. Al ducks for cover as does Ringerman,
both letting lead fly.

DEE DEE

uses the moment to yank open the Porsche passenger door and
scramble for one of her guns and ammo.

THE VAN

as the door flies open and Kitty jumps out. Toochie tries
to come after her and she slams the door hard into his bad
shoulder. He lets out a wail of anguish. She does it
again. Toochie can't see straight as he slides out the van
onto the blacktop, and:

RINGERMAN

gets off a shot that takes Al out of the picture, spins as:

DEE DEE

comes up with her pistol:

DEE DEE
Drop it!

Ringerman fires, exploding the windshield of his Porsche.
Dee Dee blows Ringerman away. Sure the action is over. Dee
Dee comes around to Kitty.

DEE DEE
(to the postal
workers and
bystanders)
Metro Police. Call for backup
and an ambulance.
(to Kitty)
You okay?

KITTY
(nods; points to
the van)
He's in there.

Dee Dee runs to the van as Kitty rounds everyone up:

INT. REAR OF VAN

Dee Dee climbs inside, checks Hunter.

DEE DEE
(calls out)
Get that ambulance!

She cradles his head in her lap.

DEE DEE
I knew you wouldn't die on me,
you lug. I knew it....

END OF ACT FOUR

FADE OUT

TAG

FADE IN

TOTAL BLACK

A phone blares at us from the darkness. Again. We hear
Hunter mumbling as a light snaps on. Hunter is in a
hospital bed in a private room. His head is bandaged and
his side is taped but he seems to be doing okay. He fumbles
the jangling phone off the hook.

HUNTER
Whoever this is, you're crazy.
You know what time it is?
(then)
McCall, you've flipped, you know
That! You've flipped!
(listens)
I was in trouble! Are you in
Trouble? Then gimme a break!
I'm a sick man, I need rest!

He slams down the phone. Rolls over and closes his eyes.
The phone rings again. His eyes pop open. It keeps on
ringing. He finally has to grab it up:

HUNTER
Yeah?
(then)
McCall, why are you doing this!
(listens)
I'm going home tomorrow. I just
wanted a couple extra days! The
Captain had no problem with it,
what's your complaint? Huh? You
still fried at me cause'a Kitty?
(beat)
You are too! Now let me get some
sleep!

He hangs up. Doesn't even get comfortable this time. The
ringing phone again.

HUNTER
(grabbing it)
I get the point!

He slams down the phone. It rings again. Hunter just takes
the phone, hurls it across the room. As he sits there, wide
awake, the door opens and a nurse pops in.

ON THE NURSE
she's tall and she's gorgeous.

NURSE
Are you all right?
(spots the phone)
What's the matter?

HUNTER
(eyeing her)
Oh...just a nightmare...reliving
...some of my action in the field.

NURSE
(picking up phone
and crossing to
Hunter)

Oh, well...you really need your
rest...

HUNTER
I don't think I can sleep right
now...

NURSE
(a beat; then)
Well...I'm just going to be
finishing up my rounds... I could
come back and talk?

HUNTER
(smiles)
That would be nice....

NURSE
(smiles back)
I should only be about ten,
fifteen minutes....

HUNTER
I'll be here.

The Nurse exits, turning back to give Hunter one more smile.
As the door closes, Hunter dials the phone.

HUNTER
McCall? Thanks.

And he hangs up, as we:
